Early writing.

JoJo found this strip of old window putty in the garden., and wrote the letters of his name with it.
Look at Heather's blog on teaching writing in her series on Homeschooling.
At this point, JoJo is 4years and 2 months. Notice how it fits in with the idea of first of all learning something with actual objects.
These letters were entirely his idea, and part of his playing.

Were you there when Piou Piou thought it was a worm a few days later and ate it?? We did our utmost to get it off her but she insisted on having it, then we watched in horror to see if she would drop down dead, but apparently hens have strong constitutions....!

No! They must have strong digestions! Remember Lucy ate a rubber band last summer while you were on holiday. And you never see a hen being sick!

That's true! And remember we didn't know she ate it, it has gone into folklore that it escaped...!!!

oh yes! I forgot that bit - and must remember that the little brown butterfly escaped! Wonder what they wil get up to this summer. Maybe the bees will keep a diary too!
